LT280: Cloud Thoughts
Cloud Thoughts are those times when you lie on your back, look up at the clouds passing by overhead and just think about random stuff. One such thought was about the timing of the personnel in the Swan Hatch…
SWAN STAFF
We’ve met Stuart Radzinsky in 1977. In at least in one time loop Radzinsky was a button-pusher in the Swan Hatch. He was there long enough to be partnered with Kelvin Joe Inman.
It is estimated that Kelvin arrived after the Purge, so let’s say late 1992. Kelvin was previously a military member stationed in Iraq during the Persian Gulf War. This is where he crosses paths with Desmond.
My cloud thought is this: could Radzinsky have EVER made it through 1992? If so, this means the Swan Hatch gets built instead of blown-up by Juliet’s rock-inducing explosion. My other cloud thought is: doesn’t that cloud on the left look a little like the Jughead bomb?
THE PERCEPTION THEORY
When giving this theory some consideration, I happened to be looking for that scene with Miles going up and down the staircase where the picture frames changed. It seemed the episode titles might be some clues for this theory. Here’s some examples:
The Pilot – as you are probably aware, the first show in a series is called the “pilot episode”. Not even sure where this term comes from, but we are left wondering if Season 1, Episode 1 is a “pilot episode” or if the pilot episode is entitled, “The Pilot”.
From my perception, it seems the answer is “The Pilot” – as in a capital “P”. It is about the guy flying the plane. I’m thinking that all crafts that have crashed on the Island are operated by persons who are pilots. Planes for sure. Hot air balloons, I’m pretty sure they are called pilots. Does one pilot a ship?
Our list of pilots include: Desmond Hume, Henry Gale, Seth Norris aboard Oceanic 815, pilot on the staged Oceanic aircraft, pilot of the Coast Guard transport plane with the Oceanic 6 aboard, and Frank Lapidus who piloted two aircraft so far – the helicopter and Ajira 316.
From my perception, I think the person piloting the aircraft is a major clue.

Orientation – these falls right into the Perception Theory nicely for your orientation affects your perception.

Whatever Happened, Happened – I wonder if this title is not one of the biggest clues. In terms of the Perception Theory, it seems this title explains only one of the perceptions. For example, notice the used of the past tense. Both sides of the statement are in the past. Only from the perception of looking back would this be true.
In thinking about this episode title, it seems the proper title should have been “Whatever Happens, Happened”. In other words, the things going on now (and in the future) are predestined to occur. In fact, there is nothing clever or noteworthy of saying, “what happened yesterday has already happened”. That’s a big Duh! So instead of just being obvious, I think it is a major clue.
From my perspective the title is really saying that whatever happened to a) an individual in b) one of several time loops did actually occur for those two conditions. But it in no way precludes from other things happening for other people at other times. Clear? HA!
THE MAGAZINE
I was hoping the official LOST magazine that came out last month would be great, but was a bit disappointed. It celebrates the 100th episode of LOST and happened to be edition number 23 – so you can see why my hopes were high.
If I tried real hard to find some interesting angle it would be that the focused on the episode, “The Variable”. They even have two editions and the variable is the cover where Locke and Ben are found on the special edition. Maybe that one contains a bit more. I’ll keep you posted if I find something.

LT279: Thinking Out Loud
SEASON 6 NEWS
Word is that LOST Season 6 will be one hour longer raising the total of hours remaining to 18. Beep…beep…beep.

Season 5 Blu-ray is expected out in time for Christmas, but if you can’t wait, then Seasons 1 and 2 have been re-leased on this format.

The official companion to the show, LOST: Messages from the Island, was published June 30…just in time for my birthday if the wife is listening.

John Locke isn’t any more dead that Charlotte Malkin. She is the psychic’s daughter who was thought to have drowned but then was raised from the dead on the doctor’s autopsy table.

When Desmond turns the Fail Safe key he mentally flashes to England and sees Charlie playing guitar, but when Charlie has his flashback (shown, not actually “had”) there is no Desmond…don’t forget The Perception Theory!

He writes that maybe the circle of events will take us back to 2004 to re-do the show, but this time with Claire and the baby getting on the helicopter…just like Desmond said would happen. This is a comment to my Perception Theory in that we don’t have the right scenes lined up with each other. In other words, Claire doesn’t die or walk off into the jungle with Christian. When that flash to repeat occurs, Miles is not on the island and he may then flash to where is in the bedroom with his dustbuster and so when he walks down the stairs, the time has changed.
KC responds: Greg, I really like the way you’ve applied the theory. Now as soon as my college classes give me a break I hope to get back to LOST REVIEW to try and find the pattern. Is it rain? Something to do with the Numbers? I do believe there is a pattern to be discovered.

Could it be that Walt is special in terms of art/drawing or could it be more magnetic?
KC responds: I like magnetic. If my biology class has been any good at all it has been the fact that it pointed out birds have a compound in their heads that give them a magnetic bearing to the north. One might say like a COMPASS. You might be asking, “What’s a compass do?” Well, it points north, John. I’m just saying that the simple explanations are sometimes right in front of us! Opps, I’m responding one paragraph at a time and you just point that out about birds. But I’m demanding a refund of my college tuition because they never told me polar bears and cows operate the same way. Too weird! One thing to throw on the heap of ideas…cows have that tendency to huddle up when bad weather approaches.

Could Jacob’s touch have instilled some magnetic properties into our Survivors? And this then could be extended to suggest that the Man in Black is a negative charge while Jacob is positively charged.
KC responds: But opposites attract, right? Maybe that is why the two men can’t get away from each other, but the maybe it is the POLAR opposite (sorry, polar came from just writing about bears). Anyway, I’m reminded of Jesus and Lucifer – both angels (positively charged?) and when you add a dash of free will, one decided to go bad (negatively charged?). While making the two beings opposite of each other, then are attracted forever.
OR…they are not opposite, but one is “real” while the other is counterfeit. Sort of like tequila from agave regions and those clones. I wonder if part of real-life confusion for humans AND the show’s message is wrapped up in the fact that we don’t have mirror-images as much as we just struggle to tell the real from the fake?

Someone…I think Librarian…suggested a copy of The Golden Bough be read. Well, I have it and it looks way to think to start during my summer semester. But it will be consumed and looks to have value long after LOST becomes a fading memory.

LT278: I've Been Framed!
DOUBLE VISION
The Perception Theory is based on observations of what some viewers consider to be prop errors. Other viewers consider the prop errors to have a reason and with those people I agree.
Consider one the more obvious (and strange) prop error. It deals with Miles in a flashback as a spiritualist. When he arrives at the woman’s house to deal with her grandson’s spirit, he goes upstairs. On the wall along the stairs are pictures as shown below:

When Miles finishes his work, he comes down the stairs as we notice the picture frames have changed:
This example is great because I believe this can’t be explained away as human error. The scene was likely shot on the same day. This reduces the chances that someone took down the pictures and then days later put them back up in different frames.
By the sheer magnitude of the number of prop errors we have observed, it is time to say these are NOT prop errors.
If we remove prop errors as an explanation of visual adjustments, then we are left with only a handful of possible alternative explanations. One of those explanations is the Perception Theory.
SAME EVENT, DIFFERENT TIME
We perceive that Miles going up the stairs is attached to Miles coming down the stairs. WRONG!
Instead my theory suggests that we have been shown the same event but at different times. When we repeat stories to others there is always a bit of an adjustment unintentionally made. Likewise, if we were to repeat events – experience the same events – there is bound to be a bit of an adjustment each time.
STAIRS
As a side note, it is interesting to note that the frames line stairs. Stairs is not one of the objects found on the list of LOST clues. The list I’m referring to would include shoes, color, body parts, etc, but I haven’t seen stairs listed very often.
It takes me to the painter, M.C. Esher, and his work shown below:
This fits with the optical illusion discussed in a couple of posts back. What we seem to perceive is not always the case!
Speaking of stairs, one of the most unique mention found in LOST involves Boone. In two visions a phrase is repeated, “Theresa falls up the stairs; Theresa falls down the stairs." Only in a Escher-like world can one fall up the stairs. More on this in a later post!
And speaking of Escher, I found it odd that another of his famous paintings is this one:
Creepy! Maybe we have stumbled upon a line of investigation which provides some insight and changes our…well…perception!

LT277: The Circle
THE PERCEPTION THEORY
Yeah, it is off-season and not a whole lot of news to report. Hoping for some sort of game or maybe they will start up the messages again. But in the meantime, you’ve got TIDBITS!
So I’m working on a new theory called the Perception Theory. The idea behind this is that maybe the show is best explained based on the viewer’s perception of things.
We already know this to be true in one sense. The show has revealed things via flashbacks and flash forwards that makes us go, “Ohh, so that’s why…”. One example is seeing how one of Danielle’s crew members lost their arm. It is those revelations that filled most of Season 5.
But could there be a more subtle perception issue going on?
Over the next few posts, my goal is to share some possible perception concepts to ponder. We begin with the show’s original name.
THE CIRCLE
It has not only intrigued me that the show WAS called “The Circle”, but why they changed it. It may have been to keep the real meaning hidden – at least a while longer since we all found out.
In many ways this changes the meaning. For example, the spring gives the suggestion of expansion and loops. When looking at “The Circle” from one perception results in a continuous path. But from a side-view perception we find the meaning shifts to suggest cycles (loops).
Could this be the first clue of the show?
Often I’ve been reminded of The Sixth Sense movie. You had to watch it twice to prove to yourself that your powers of perception could use a little practice. Frustrating and cool at the same time. When I find myself comparing that movie to LOST, the number of comparisons is striking.
So what happens when we revisit past seasons of LOST with a new perception? In the next post this weekend, I will share on scene where we MUST adjust our perception in order to see what is really being shown!

Today’s posting is going to be a bit of a ramble as I write while I think. As you know, TIDBITS started a LOST REVIEW section a few weeks back. The idea was to review past episodes and find things that make a whole lot more sense now, then they did back then. The goal was to find a single unifying explanation to all things LOST.
My latest attempt at a theory to explain things with LOST seems to have some promise in the early stages. To verify it, we need to revive the LOST REVIEW and take a peek at some past scenes and see if my theory holds up.
So what is my latest theory? Keep reading…

The idea behind the theory is that what seems out-of-place on the show is not really out-of-place, but a matter of perception.

Is this a picture of two faces or one cup? Gestalt theory says, “our brains makes sense of shapes and symbols putting them together like a jigsaw puzzle, formulating that which isn't there to that which is believable.”
Well if that doesn’t sound like LOST in a nutshell, then my name isn’t Henry Gale.
If we apply my theory to the above image then the answer will be, “It is both a cup and two faces.”

So check back each Wednesday and Sunday as we do our own little rewind of LOST looking for support of my Perception Theory.
