LT292: Island of Misfits

JOHN IN A BOX

I’ll admit up front that this isn’t thought completely through so here are some loose thoughts…

Isn’t it supposed to be “Jack in a Box”?

Wasn’t there a toy stuck on an island of misfits called “Charlie in a Box”?

So we have John in a box while another John is walking around. How in the world did the Dead John get into the metal box?

Isn’t it supposed to be Dear John instead?

Would this make the new group and keepers of the metal box sort of like timeline protectors as much as Ben and Mrs. Hawking think they are timeline protectors?

Did the flash on Ajira Flight 316 cause a “split” from Dead John to Walking John?
I believe that the John in a Coffin had to be the Walking John, because how (and why) else would Ilena and her group move John from a coffin to a metal box? Does this mean the metal box was on board the plane? Would that be a flashback and a half to see two bodies of John being wheeled into the cargo bay?

Like I said…loose thoughts…

First, it is very interesting from the perspective of how everyone looks at each other while first boarding Oceanic Flight 815 (man, have we come a long way or what?).

Second, the idea of another plane crash is intriguing.

Third, unsupported rumors are that this video was shown at Comic Con at the LOST panel.

Fourth, the final seconds of footage is actually from the movie, “Knowing”.

For now, it best to view this with a lot of doubt.


REWINDING THE TAPE

Remember when Boone was going to die from his fall from the Beechcraft airplane? At the time Jack was asking everyone for blood donations to do the transfusions on Boone. I’m re-watching some old episodes and this fact jumps out at me differently then when I first saw it.

In a few seasons Kate is going to offer her blood in a transfusion to save young Ben because as she states it, “I’m a universal donor”.

So where was this helpful attitude when Boone was dying? Maybe Kate wanted or needed Boone to die and kept quiet. Hmmm…

Well, this got me thinking about other characters and how their words and actions might take on a different meaning knowing what we know now. I’m starting on Danielle because there are tons of changes with her now that we know her flashbacks. For example, did she really light the fire to cause the black smoke? There was no black smoke when Alex was taken as she claimed.

You get the idea…I’ll share more as these oddities jump out at me.

LT291: Lost Footage…Now Found

THE DOCUMENTARY

ABC was doing some cleaning up in their video vault when they discovered a handful of episodes of an old documentary. The subject of the documentary was the Dharma Initiative Group. It seems the documentary was never aired for various reasons.

ABC will air the four episodes on-line at :http://beta.abc.go.com/shows/lost/lost-mysteries Each part will be released about a month apart.

The show’s official title is, “Mysteries of the Universe: The Dharma Initiative”.


MYSTERIES OF THE UNIVERSE – EPISODE 2

A college student near Las Vegas is making plans to attend a costume party in 1978. He goes to a thrift store and picks out a jumpsuit so he can be a janitor. The only thing outstanding about the jumpsuit is that it contains a non-descript Dharma patch. He is photographed in costume at the party which in turn shows up in local newspapers. A few days later, two men appear and question the student.

Nevada is known as a hotbed of extraterrestrial activities. It is the host of the famed Area 51. The military members of Area 51 are known to where similar jumpsuits of various colors denoting their rank. It seems commonplace for staff at the installation to be called away for extended periods of time.

Could Area 51 be linked to this Dharma Group? A Nevada man claims his neighbor, known only as “Phil”, was interviewing for a job out in Michigan with the Dharma Initiative and then suddenly went missing.

Research by the documenter reveals similar missing stories involving the Dharma Initiative can be found in the Portland, Oregon area. Parents of a school teacher named Olivia said their daughter also went through several interviews and strange tests for the Dharma Initiative then one day she just vanished. The parents have never heard from her since.

Olivia’s parents had kept copies of some of the paperwork related to the job interview. On it were question like these:

-- What three words describe you?
-- What animal do you indentify with?
-- Describe your first kiss in three words?
-- Who is your constant?
-- What would you sacrifice to stay alive?
-- What makes you cry?
-- You just stole a sick child’s toy. Why?

What type of organization would use interview techniques often reserved for psychological tests for the criminally insane? Why the secrecy?

The next episode will be aired on September 8.

I enjoyed the expose on the Dharma Initiative for if you recall, their original purpose and mission is probably nothing like what we found in 2004. It never occurred to me to label the Dharma Group as a “secret society”, but it does fit…maybe even the word cult should be used?

LT290: Course Work

MY COURSES

If you read TIDBITS faithfully then you know two things about me. First, I’m taking college classes. Second, I see LOST in everything…mostly because I’m looking for it.

I just finished a couple of Astronomy courses and someone said something that made me say, “Hmmm…”. What if LOST was about some mission to Mars?

If we wanted clues we have plenty of them beginning with star names like Apollo. The Egyptians called Mars, “Horus the Red”. It is the FOURTH planet from the Sun.

There is a crater on Mars known as the Galle Crater whose nickname is the “Smiley Face Crater”. On the real Henry Gale’s balloon we observed a large smiley face.

I also learned that there are several types of time – solar, sidereal, and um, well others! The time discrepancy we see on the show might be related to WHERE in the universe the island is positioned.

All the planets have orbits that perform a type of dance with each other where at only certain times can certain things happen – like a window of opportunity. Mars has opposition to Earth once every 23 months, for example.

Am I reading too much into my coursework or just maybe…

LT289: Some Real Clues...or Not?

SEASON SIX PROMO

Here is a promo picture for Season 6:

Sort of clouded in mystery, huh? If you’ve been reading my posts lately then you know there is some emphasis being placed on the numbers 15 and 16. This emphasis comes from the summer game involving those unauthorized paintings.

The poster could be a hint, so look at the 15th and 16th persons. It appears Number 15 is Sayid, but I can’t make out the 16th person in that row – looks female to me.

As TIDBITS is known to do, we kept digging and found this image instead:



Ah, Number 16 is Libby. Wait, Libby?!!

And there’s Michael and Mr. Eko and the whole gang. How can we not pull some theories out of this single image? If everyone is back, then can you “square one”? Loop, dude, loop.

SIDE NOTE: In an interview ages ago, the producers mentioned that 23 was the key number. I’ve seen little supporting evidence of that since, but it has never left my mind and deserves mention. In Season 5 we could argue that 16 was prominent (Flight 316), so maybe they changed their minds, but felt the 23 spotlight shouldn’t be forgotten.


COMPUTER THEORY

Faithful readers will know about my Computer Theory floated a few months ago. It sort of lost (ha) steam when Season 5 started pushing the time jumps because of the Frozen Dharma Wheel.

But with the new promo picture above, I have to at least throw the idea that computer programs are full of loop procedures. Do While…Do Until…For/Next…you get the idea.

It seems with Season 6 teasers we are going to go back to the beginning where everyone is present and accounted for. Maybe the looping is time-oriented, but I have to point out that the producers have also stated that the time stuff was basically over in Season 5. Hmm….

So if time looping is done for, then I wish to revisit computer looping. Most computer program loops are for a) a certain number of iterations or b) until a certain condition is met. I’m leaning towards option B.

I’m working on some ideas that will be presented in future posts, so for now let me just throw out a series of words to consider: computers, eye, and microchip. HA!

LT288: Plotting the Plot

THE PLOT THICKENS

In the last TIDBITS post we learned that a comedian turned painter named Paul Scheer was being told to stop creating his LOST-inspired artwork (including the Polar Bear painting seen in the last post) without authorization.

I quickly typed in Ronie Midfew Arts into Google and found his page at http://roniemidfewarts.com/i/ and there is just this logo:

When one hovers over the logo, a message can be read as such:

It seems that August 15 will be a pivotal day in the life of Mr. Scheer and the LOST family. Scheer’s velvet paintings will be sold online at http://www.damoncarltonandpolarbear.com/

Currently there are over 15 links (remember the logo sub-title about 16) on this site, so that should fill your days for awhile.


SEASON SIX PROMO

As of this writing we have learned that the title of Episode 1 will be, “LA X”. It was pointed out that there is a space between “A” and “X”, so we would be rash to jump to the conclusion that this is a reference to the airport in Los Angeles.

It could simply mean there is some sort of variable found in LA. Or I like to think of “X marks the spot” where some treasure or major piece of the LOST puzzle can be found. Hmmm…


LATEST NOT-SO-CRAZY THEORY

With Comic Con and the new summer game, it seems the theorists are reinvigorated with ideas. Here is one of the best ones…

LOST is telling the truth…always has…always will. But…

I’m reminded of news lately about the truth in photography. One example is from the last Olympics where that little Chinese girl was lip-synching the song. They put her out there because she “looked better” while the better voice was backstage doing her part.

Also in the Olympics we learned that the TV shots on NBC add CGI-added fireworks.

A story on NPR discussed photography that has been altered in this Photoshop era. However, it seems that images from several decades past had been staged. We aren’t talking average Joe, but some of the more famous pictures taken. The ones that moved a country to action or inaction. Amazing how much influence media has.

But the point behind this theory is that everything is perception and perspective. A photographer tried to explain that an angle of a shot is in many ways like Photoshop cropping. Had the picture taker widen the view to see normal life, then the huddled mass along a bullet-riddled wall wouldn’t have quite the impact. If another photographer caught the first with tripod and hollering out orders, would that have worked as effectively for change? Probably not.

And so this debate relates to this LOST theory in that the producers have cheated in some ways. They have cropped the image, truncated the dialog and abbreviated the meaning. Season 6 then will widen those angles, elongate the conversation and elaborate on the fuller meaning. And the season will do this several times.

We have been teased with this all along with the flashbacks filling in a puzzle piece which makes us think, “OH! That’s why!”.

And it will continue, but likely in a rapid pace like we’ve not seen before. I expect many of us will think we have the understanding only to see a completely different point of view.

Think of the airplane crash…

…we’ve seen it from Ben’s point of view as he sends Ethan and Goodwin off to die.

…we’ve seen it from Locke’s point of view as he wiggles his toes.

…we’ve seen it from Jack’s point of view as he self-anoints himself as The Fixer of all that is broken.

I suspect Season 6 will show us a few more point of views and in the end…nothing did change as Daniel predicted. The bomb blew, the hatch imploded, the past stayed the same. However, our view, our perspective of events will radically change based on what we are about to see.

This theory is worth remembering.

LT287: The Summer Games Are On

You would have to be a major lover in (modern?) art to like this painting:

This is a “real” painting done by Paul Scheer (who makes a living as a comedian) and given to Damon and Carlton at this year’s Comic Con. Afterwards, Paul gets a cease and desist order from some art gallery named “RONIE MIDFEW ARTS”.

Of course, Ronie Midfew Arts, is an anagram for “Widmore Fine Arts”. Of course.
